Every fall, Medicare opens a window where you can change your coverage for the year ahead. It is called the Annual Enrollment Period — most people know it as “open enrollment” — and it runs October 15 through December 7. Any change you make takes effect January 1.
Here is the honest reason this window matters, even if you like your current plan: plans change every year, and they change quietly. Your premium, your drug list, your copays, and even which doctors are in network can all be different next year — and the only heads-up you get is a thick envelope called the Annual Notice of Change that arrives in September and is easy to set aside. AEP is your chance to catch those changes before they catch you.
What You Can Do During AEP
Between October 15 and December 7, you are allowed to:
- Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, or the other way around
- Move from one Medicare Advantage plan to a different one
- Join a Part D prescription drug plan, switch plans, or drop one
You can make as many changes as you want during the window — only your last choice by December 7 counts.
Why It Is Worth a Look Every Single Year
Most people who skip their yearly review are not making a poor choice on purpose — they just assume “same plan, same coverage.” Often it is not. A drug you take may move to a higher tier. A monthly premium may creep up. A clinic you rely on may leave the network. Spending twenty minutes to line your plan up against your actual prescriptions, doctors, and pharmacy is the simplest way to make sure your coverage still fits you — and to spot a more suitable option if one exists.
Have these handy when you review: a current list of your medications and doses, your preferred pharmacy, and the doctors you want to keep.
The Other Windows, Briefly
AEP is not the only time Medicare lets you make changes:
- Turning 65? You have your own seven-month Initial Enrollment Period around your birthday — that is separate from AEP.
- Already in a Medicare Advantage plan? There is a second window, January 1 – March 31, when you can make one change if your new plan is not working out.
- A life change — moving, losing employer coverage, and similar events — can open a Special Enrollment Period outside the normal windows.
How We Help — With No Pressure and No Cost to You
This is the season we are built for. As an independent agency, we are not tied to one insurance company, so our job during AEP is simple: sit down with you, compare your current plan against what is available for next year, and help you land on what is optimal for your situation. If your current plan still fits, we will tell you to keep it.
And our help is always free to you — the insurance carriers pay us, not you. You get an experienced local advisor in your corner at no cost, and never a hard sell.
