Understanding Medicare in Missouri
If Medicare has your head spinning, take a breath — you’re not behind, and you’re not slow. Medicare is genuinely confusing, and most of that confusion comes from the language, not any failing on your part.
Here’s how Jonathan — “JJ” to his family and close friends — likes to explain it: “My name is Jonathan, but the people closest to me call me JJ. Same person, two different names. Medicare’s the same way — there are about four different names for everything.” Medicare Advantage, Part C, an “MA” plan, an “MAPD” when it includes drug coverage — all pointing at the same basic idea. Once you realize the names are the hard part, the rest gets a lot simpler.
Olympus Insurance Associates is a local, independent Medicare agency in Springfield, run by three advisors — Jonathan Jackson, Daniel Torres, and Ashton Stevens. Our whole approach is to take Medicare apart piece by piece so you can see how it works — and then put it back together around your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget. We don’t just hand you a plan; we make sure you actually understand it.
What Is Medicare?
Medicare is the federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older, plus some younger people with qualifying disabilities. It’s built from a few “parts,” each covering different things, with a couple of ways to put them together. We’ll walk through each piece below — and don’t worry about memorizing any of it. That’s our job.
Medicare, One Piece at a Time
- Medicare Eligibility — who qualifies and when.
- Medicare Enrollment Periods — the deadlines that matter, and the penalties for missing them.
- Medicare Costs — premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket basics.
- Medicare Part A — hospital coverage.
- Medicare Part B — doctor and outpatient coverage.
- Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) — all-in-one private plans.
- Medicare Part D — prescription drug coverage.
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) — filling the gaps in Original Medicare.
- Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage — how to choose.
How We’re Different
Two things drive everything we do: honesty, and a work ethic that doesn’t quit until your situation is actually resolved. Here’s the part we’re proudest of — if we ever find that someone else can serve you better than we can, we’ll tell you, and we’ll point you their way. We’re a for-profit business, so that’s not always the easy thing to do. But we don’t operate only in “for-profit” mode. Doing right by the person in front of us comes first, every time. That’s the reassurance you’ll feel when you sit down with us: a real person who’s genuinely on your side.
Here’s the difference that matters most: we’re an independent broker, not a captive agent tied to one insurance company. A captive agent’s job is to convince you their company’s plan is the one to pick. Ours is different — we represent many carriers, so we can focus on the only question that counts: what’s optimal for you? On Medicare Advantage and drug plans, carriers pay largely the same commission no matter which company you pick, so we never earn more by nudging you toward one carrier over another. The recommendation is simply about your needs.
There’s an honest truth about how we get paid, and we’d rather you hear it straight from us. Carriers pay us two ways: a new-sale commission when we enroll you in a plan — and switching an existing client to a different plan generally counts as a new sale — versus a smaller renewal when we simply keep you in the plan you already have. A new sale generally pays more than a renewal. Read that again, because it means the money often nudges toward moving people around. We don’t play that game: if the plan you’re in still fits you, we keep you right there and take the smaller renewal — because doing right by you is the entire job. That’s a temptation we turn down every single year.
Whether you’re turning 65, retiring, or just want an honest second opinion on the plan you already have, we’re here — and there’s never a cost for our help.
Not sure which way to go? Good — that means you’re weighing it the right way. Healthcare shouldn’t be a guessing game. As an independent broker — not a captive agent who represents a single company — we’re not here to push one plan on you. We’re here to answer the question that actually matters: what’s optimal for you? Call (417) 429-4444 or request an appointment. Our help is always free.
